How Oil And Gas Marketing/Brokerage Can Give Individual Financial Freedom

Oil and gas business is a money spinner. It is Nigeria's most important revenue source for many decades. The sector generates more than 90% of internal revenue for the country.

The most important products in this sector are AGO (diesel) and PMS (petrol). Others include DPK (kerosene), Lacasera, blue gas and LPFO (black oil).

The profitability in this  business sector has been on the increase as a result of poor power (light) supply in the country and continuous large increase in the number of automobiles in Nigeria. These factors keep on making the business a very lucrative one and highly profitable for anyone that ventures into it.

How To Go Into The Business As An Individual?

Anyone regardless of your educational background or financial status can go into the business as a broker or independent marketer. There is no requirement for being a broker in this business sector, no licence is required for a broker.

You can comfortably start this business with no capital as an independent broker. Your duty is to facilitate sales between buyer and seller.  The business mostly run on payment on delivery basis as long as the buyer issues you LPO (Local purchase order). LPO is a document issued by a buyer to a broker or seller telling him to supply a certain product at a given time.

With a valid LPO, you can successfully conclude a deal.

Hear this, getting clients or company to issue you LPO is one of the easiest thing in this business sector because the buyer is constantly looking for a cheaper product or someone that can supply faster. There is no permanent supplier here for companies, factories, construction companies, banks, estates, hotels, schools, etc; even fuel stations too, except those on franchise.
These are places of opportunities for any independent broker to get clients.

Getting steady and trusted suppliers is no big deal as I will tell you how to do that, and will also link you up with some suppliers or better still, we can supply at best rate. Keep reading.

How TO Make Money In This Business?

As I said earlier, the business is very profitable. To be successful in this business, you need to be honest, and be serious about the business.
You can make money by earning commission or by the amount you added per litre of any product or both. I prefer both. Let me explain further.

For instance you are asked to supply 33,000 litres of AGO. And the supplier tells you that they supplier at ₦550 per litre. You can tell the buyer that you are supplying at ₦560 per litre. After successful deal, you will be making 45,000 times ₦10, which will amount to ₦450,000. This is in just one deal, with no stress. The supplier will take the responsibility of delivery the product as long as the buyer issues LPO.  You can also negotiate commission from the supplier and earn more. You get paid immediately after the product is discharged.

The same applies to PMS but the profit here is usually less as you cannot add more than ₦2 to the supplier's price, otherwise, the buyer might feel it's too expensive and look elsewhere. And the capacity of PMS trucks are usually 33,000 litres.

There is more money to make in AGO than PMS. The key to making money is getting a reliable supplier with good price.

The supplies may also be for smaller buyers like hotels, banks, estates, etc that buy like 10,000 litres of AGO at a go. Factories, construction companies and fuel stations, buy up to 45,000 litres and more at a go.

But don't neglect any market, there could be steady supply demands from the small capacity buyers.

You can run supplies more than 2 times in a month and be smiling to the bank.

How TO Get Customers/Clients?

There is no clean cut to this. One can get clients through referral from someone you know. The key is to let your family, friends and associates know that you are into the business first. You must look responsible before marketing your business for people to have confidence in you.

Other ways are:

  1. Through the use of proposal letter. This a very vital tool in the business. You can draft a unique proposal letter for each company you want to visit and deliver the letter to the key decision maker in the company.
  2. Through the use of introduction letter.
  3. Through social media.
  4. By word of the month.
  5. Using a website. This is one of my favourite as you can design your website to look like a big company and make it available for Google search.
  6. Using stickers and fliers
  7. Announcing it in gatherings like your church, WhatsApp group, Facebook page and groups, in your school, etc.

You can comfortably run this business on a part-time basis as a side hustle or as a full scale business. You can use your phone for marketing online. You may not even need to leave your house to make your first deal in this business. You can run it from home.
No office is required, except you want to go into full scale, have office and register your business name with CAC. Otherwise, you can just run it from anywhere you are as an independent broker and be making good money monthly.

This business sector is very large and highly profitable.

How To Get Started?

The business requires seriousness and honesty. You must establish trust with the buyer and even supplier to be successful. The business is also very delicate and one needs to be careful in all dealings. Consequently, you will need some kind of training and mentorship.

How To Start Cooking Gas (LPG) Distribution/Reselling Business With Little Capital In Nigeria

UPDATED: July, 2022

Cooking gas (LPG) refilling and distribution business is already a very lucrative business to venture into. The reason for these is not far fetch. Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) is environmental-friendly, much cheaper and cooks meal faster. The market for this product is growing by the minute as even rural areas are shifting from using kerosene and firewood. Just recently, federal government have announced plan to make it easier for each home to be making use of cooking gas and consequently they are working on creating more MDCs (micro distribution center) which anyone can take advantage of.

Despite the fact that the competition is there in the business, there are lots of profit to be made. More people are embracing cooking gas daily and moreover, households refill their cylinders often. Just like filling/fuel station where competition is even more higher, people are still venturing into it because of the big profit it generates. Cooking gas business is more of the same nature, in fact,  as an oil/gas marketer, I can tell you that you stand a chance of making more profit as a cooking gas refilling business owner than as a fuel station owner.

You can start cooking gas business on a small scale or medium/large scale.

Small scale involves the use of small cylinders in storing your LPG for onward refilling/selling to your customers, usually for domestic/cooking needs. You use two 100kg cylinders for this purpose or twenty 12.5kg cylinders. Though there is plan on a abolishing this type of small scale refilling system, the government are planning on making them MDCs.

Location is a very important factor when starting this business on a scale scale. Also, you don’t need much capital to start this business.

If you apply the right strategy, you should be generating not less than ₦8,000 in profit daily, for small scale dealers.

Medium/large scale involves the installation of LPG plant. There are various sizes of the plant and you can start this business on a medium scale without breaking bank. In fact, with a good business plan, you can easily get a loan from bank to start this business and, you sure will be able to pay back the money and the interest in about 8 months. Banks are aware of the potentials of the business and are willing to give out loans. There cooking gas installation companies that have made it easier for you to start this business by providing the necessary assistance required such as free installation and maintenance, securing of licenses and permits required, free equipments such as safety gadgets, free Safe training for your employees, delivery of LPG to your plant without charging logistic fees, etc.

Cooking gas plant is more profitable than a fuel station. Here is the reason why I said so, after conducting a market research for one of our clients, we discovered that more people make use of cooking gas than petrol and diesel combined. For example, in a students' hotel, almost all students are using gas while only about 3% of them own automobile or generator. Now, when these students graduate and get jobs, they will probably go for a car and also a higher capacity cooking gas cylinder. And when they left school, other students there were previously staying in their parents houses replace them and acquire their own had cylinder.

That is how profitable this business is.

There is a large market for LPG. As has been previously stated, the demand for cooking gas in Nigeria is growing and will continue to do so in the foreseeable future. This means that there will be a need to cater to this increasing demand. Thus, starting and running a cooking gas refilling business is a good investment.

We have been in the business of oil and gas and have acquire experience over time on the downstream section. Hence, we have come up with the manual to help individuals and cooperate bodies that want to venture into the business of cooking gas refilling on a small scale and medium/large scale.
